Introduction

A Wireless Thermometer That Doesn't Drop

What's up BBQ fans! Today we're talking about the newest wireless thermometer on the market, the Typhur Sync Gold Dual (use code: RUMANDCOOK to save 10%). I think it has a real chance at dethroning some of the leaders in the space. Here's my first look.

Why Signal Matters to Me

I've used wireless thermometers for six or seven years, and my cookers are tough on signals: the Komodo Kamado has 2-inch refractory walls, my Workhorse 1975 offset is 3/8-inch steel, and my Yoder YS640s is 10-gauge steel.

I've tried the MEATER, MEATER Plus, MEATER Block, a ChefsTemp model and last year's ThermoWorks RFX. The only one that didn't drop signal for me was the ThermoWorks. But it needs a separate pit probe, the remote is just an on/off button, and the app is entry-level at best. So I kept looking.

Full disclosure: Typhur is a new partner. About 99% of my partners are products I bought and used first, then reached out to. I turn down requests every day, because I only want to represent products I truly believe in.

The Base

  • Works without the app. The base has its own display, so you can use both probes and carry the base anywhere. Most other products require the app.

  • Smart mode: set a target, say 130°F, and it calculates the remaining time and gives you a countdown. It even suggests a pull window, like 114 to 129°F, based on how fast the temperature is rising, so the rest is built in.

  • A kickstand, USB-C charging and about 24 hours per charge.

  • The Dual has two probes. There's also a Quad with four.

On a warm fall day, I sat outside with the dogs and a rum and Coke with just the base next to me.

The Probes

  • Five internal sensors from the tip to the insertion line. Push it in past the line. In the app's professional mode, you can see each sensor individually. On a big roast, a single tip sensor can miss what's happening in the rest of the meat.

  • A ceramic ambient sensor in the handle, rated to 932°F, so you can sear with it.

  • Probes are IPX8 and dishwasher safe. Each lasts up to 50 hours, and a 5-minute fast charge gives you about 2 hours.

  • The base handles light rain, but it doesn't matter, because you can just bring it inside. With my MEATER, I used to bag it every time it rained, since it had to sit so close to the pit.

The App

The app can run a guided cook, like a brisket, with a graph of internal, ambient and target temps, and it shows up on my watch. Since it also connects over Wi-Fi, you can check your cook from the grocery store.

Range: The Big One

The key is sub-1G radio, rated to 3,000 ft unobstructed and 700 ft obstructed. It also has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

  • In the Komodo Kamado: I walked 315 ft into my backyard, measured with my golf rangefinder, and sat there watching the temperature climb. No drops.

  • In my kitchen oven: it was rainy and windy, so for this test I put a probe in a sacrificial potato in my GE Monogram at 400°F. The door is 2½ inches thick with double-pane glass, and my house is stucco, which signals have a hard time getting through. I carried the base 250 ft before my phone got a disconnect alert. A couple of steps back, it reconnected right away.

After five or six cooks, I haven't had a single drop.

Final Thoughts

So far, I'm pretty darn happy with it. The sub-1G range is the standout, and the standalone base and multi-sensor probes make it easy to use. Do your own research and don't just take my word for it. I'll do a full in-depth review after a couple more months of cooking with it.
